July 2010

Dear All,

Wednesday, 9 & Thursday, 10 June the following 3 crimes took place overnight.

College Lane, Ellisfield

A detached garage in College Lane was broken into, overnight – the front up and over doors were forced open and a chainsaw, leaf blower and strimmer were all stolen.

Weston Patrick

A wooden side door of a similar garage was forced to gain entry and a Mitre saw was stolen.

Preston Candover

A blue long wheel based Land Rover was stolen from Preston Candover.  The police are aware that the vehicle was driven through Chilton & Brown Candover and went towards Woodmancott. However, pleased to advise that the Land Rover was recovered in Surrey.  PC Reid believes this crime is linked to the two garages broken into that night – see above.

Monday, 24 May - Upton Grey : Sus silver van, driver selling furniture

Please call PC Reid if you have seen this individual, large build, swarthy looking and driving a new style silver Ford Transit van offering to garden furniture for sale.  The male seemed keen to look at the burglar alarm whilst waiting for the occupant of the house, stated he was looking at the birds.

Travellers

PC Reid is keen that I should inform you about the recent incident involving travellers and to ask all residents to be aware and to take particular care in securing garages and if possible have alarms fitted and set.  Secure your property against crime!

Farmers & Land Owners – please secure your fields and gates to prevent access.

Parish Councils – please make sure that the green areas under your control do not allow easy access.

St John Ambulance – Raising Funds from June to December 2010

I have been asked to inform you that St John’s Ambulance will be undertaking ‘door to door’ fundraising within Hampshire from June to December 2010.  The fundraisers will have appropriate identification and will be seeking Direct Debit donations.  The Police I am told will be notified prior to the fundraisers visiting our area.  If in doubt, check with your local SNT as they will be aware and can quickly check if the people are bona fides of the fundraisers.

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – fight crime!

PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on: 01256 389050 & 07768 776844.

June 2010

Dear All,

Good News!  Police in Kent and Sussex recovered, at the Dartford Crossing, a significant amount of plant machinery including a CAT 8DL bulldozer and a Volvo excavator stolen from North East Hants.  The crucial information which led to the recovery was serial and chassis numbers.  Please consider recording these facts and retain in a safe place!

Friday, 7 May at South Warnborough – Suspicious Incident – bogus callers!
A local resident had a strange visit from a man claiming to need to see/read her electricity meter; the man was carrying a clipboard and flashed something that looked like an official card.  The resident did not let the man in who advised that a reduction in the cost of electricity could be claimed if he gained access to read the meter, and he asked to see the electricity bill.  The man went on to talk about the gas supply benefits – there is no gas in Froyle Lane!  The resident asked the man if he knew her name but he did not.  The man drove off quickly once he realised he could not gain access.  A white/silver coloured saloon car P141 P--?  There was a woman with him who was waiting by the houses opposite during the conversation by the door but left in the car with the man.

The resident was very suspicious as she had only recently been in touch with her electricity supplier and knew the man who usually read her meter.  She telephoned them and was assured that nobody from the company had called on her, however, the company stated it might have been a representative from another electricity company.

Thursday, 6 May – Cliddesden, close to the pond
At around 11pm the bench located near to Cliddesden pond was damaged beyond repair.  PC Reid is aware that a group of youths were in this area and drove away in a car without lights on.  If you were in Cliddesden area that evening and if you saw or heard anything please report it to PC Reid.

Monday, 3 May at Winslade - Suspicious incident
At about 1.30pm a male, described as Turkish appearance, was on the A339 near the large lay-by at Winslade; the man was stopping traffic in the lay-by asking for money to purchase some petrol as his car had run out.  When a member of the public offered to get him some petrol, the man said that he only wanted the money and handed him a load of gold!  This is normally a scam for money.

Saturday, 17 / Sunday, 18 April at Curdridge – Stolen horse box
A SCANIA Horse Box, index 4813TR valued in excess of £80,000, was stolen during the weekend of 17/18 April – if you have any information please call the police.

Drink Drivers!
PC Reid is concerned about the number of drivers, drinking and driving which he advised increases during the summer months, and provides the following advice “if you think you can drink and drive – think again – we will catch you”.  PC Reid is keen to receive, in confidence, any information on drink driving.

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – fight crime!

PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on: 01256 389050 & 07768 776844.

April 2010

Dear All,

PC Reid has asked that I bring the following to your attention:

Suspicious Vehicle: Red Volvo V40 Estate Reg. S699 JOB
Vehicle and occupants may be involved in rural crime, particularly, dwelling burglaries.

Burghclere Church, 08 March - theft of Copper
PC Reid is concerned for our local churches are once again being targeted; copper has been stolen twice from within the Burghclere Church.  Please keep an eye on our churches or any other local vulnerable buildings.

Dog Owners: please do keep your dogs under proper control, preferably on a lead while walking amongst livestock but particularly during the lambing season.  Sadly when dogs chase and injure or kill sheep they normally continue to do it!  In 2009 there were 3 cases of dogs worrying sheep, one resulted in a lamb being killed and the others put down – needless to say the dogs were destroyed.

Theft from parked cars: Spring has sprung and more and more people are out walking.  In anticipation of another busy walking season and, in particular, when our bluebells bloom; the police advise they have seen an increase in thefts from motorcars parked in isolated rural area’s whilst owners go walking.  PC Reid asks drivers to be aware that if you leave your vehicle in a remote area please make sure handbags are not placed under seats, sat nav’s left in glove compartments and laptops and/or a brief cases etc left in the boot (PLACES THE THIEVES LOOK!).    Also, please note that criminals have a device that can detect such equipment in your car boot!

Rogue Traders:   Trading Standards wish to alert residents to the fact that rogue traders are cold calling within this area offering roof repairs.   Be aware and don’t be taken in by these tricksters!  Once they are on your property then the small repair you want done usually ends up with the tricksters finding ‘further problems’ which would then cost much more.   If you have any information about these traders or require advice on doorstep crime then can contact Hampshire County Council's Quick Response Team on 01962 833666, where specially trained officers are on hand to provide assistance.

Theft of car keys: remove your car keys from downstairs or away from the hall area, ideally take them upstairs or secure away from the front or back door or windows of the house.  With more effective car alarms these days please be aware that the main way to steal cars is by breaking into the house; 99% of night time burglaries (which in themselves are extremely rare), are in this mode.  Last year on PC Reid’s beat we saw a reduction in dwelling burglaries with 7 in total being reported for the 78 sq mile beat area; this was 3 less than in 2008 and 9 less than in 2007.

Your Voice Your Community – Safer Neighbourhood Team
Have your say on what the policing priorities should be for your area.  How they can ensure a good quality of life for everyone?  What are the main priorities that you would like the police to address?   PC Reid wishes to encourage residents to advise him and local police about their concerns.  Contact PC Reid or the Local Safer Neighbourhood Officer on 0845 045 4545.

Please do ensure that you secure your property; outside sheds and barns as well as the house. Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

March 2010

Dear All,

PC Reid has asked that I bring the following to your attention.

Suspicious Vehicles :

Friday, 12 February - red car (type unknown) driver and passenger (2 white young men) wearing ‘beeney’ hats were seen in Upton Gregy at about 8pm attempting to steal straddle stones.

For information: PC Reid recently spoke with a 'dealer' in such things and the dealer advised that owners of such artifacts should consider drilling a hole in both the base of the top stone and in the top of the base stone, then place a metal rod in the hole so it joins the two together and then cements the parts together. This makes the stone one complete item and too heavy for two men to lift.

Friday, 12 February mid morning, West Meon – the driver of a white Mercedes Sprinter van, Reg. BV54 XSE was seen looking into nearby vehicles.  On being spotted he quickly made off.  The man is described as being white, about 6ft 2ins tall, with ginger hair and a beard and wearing a green jumper and jeans.

Friday, 12 February between 1.00 & 2.00pm - a white Ford Escort, Reg. N532 OTG van was stolen in Winchester.

Thursday, 11 February mid morning in Micheldever – a white van, registration given as LD51 KUB, was seen driving slowly round the area with occupants paying close attention to houses.

Monday, 08 February, silver Peugeot Reg. Y394 EBW – seen in Brown Candover, two white young men acting suspiciously.  They were also seen near Andover on Saturday, 06 February in similar circumstances.

Saturday, 06 February, a white Land Rover with an orange light on top – called at an address in Kingsclere asking the occupant if they would like work done on the driveway. The resident declined the offer - no registration details taken but the vehicle had "motorway maintenance" written on the back.

Friday, 05 February, West Meon - 3 males in a tatty green Ford Transit, Reg. R524 VRA were seen driving slowly round the village. The van looked as if it had been hand-painted.

Sunday, 31 January between 3 and 4pm – a witness called Police to say that they had seen 3 males running from a farm area and one was armed with a crow bar.   The witness stated that all the males were in their 20’s and of slim build.  One of the males was white and he was wearing a black hooded jumper, had black curly hair and black side burns and was carrying a double ended crow bar.  One of the other males was dressed in some kind of beige top and wearing Adidas tracksuit bottoms with a white stripe down the side.

Please do ensure that you secure your property; outside sheds and barns as well as the house. Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

December 2009

Dear All,

PC Reid and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Previously not reported in the NW report:

Ellisfield, Thursday, 10 September - garden bench stolen during the evening of the 10th.  The bench is very rare as it's from Bali and has carvings of mythical creatures on the front legs.  A blue Peugeot van was seen going up the owners drive around 18.30 hrs and then leaving a few moments later.   Driver of the van was a swarthy man in his 60’s with a beard and accompanied by a blonde in her 50’s.

WARNING:
SAS Fire & Security Systems Ltd –
is know to offer ‘free’ burglar alarms but only if you sign up to the additional monitoring facilities.  The Company is working in North Hampshire.

Rogue Traders - are cold calling the Basingstoke and South Ham areas of Hampshire offering roof repair services.  The traders are currently operating under the name of Wyevale Construction and are not providing consumers with the required notice of right to cancel, which gives consumers a 7 day cooling off period.

If approached please report the matter straight away to the Trading Standards quick response team on 01962 833666.

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

November 2009

Dear All,

Please can you assist PC Reid and provide any information in relation to these crimes?

Herriard Tuesday, 6 October – at around 8pm two agricultural Manitou's were stolen from the Recycling Plant at Herriard.  Driven down Bushywarren Lane, College Lane on to Axford Road, Ellisfield, one was abandoned in the woods at Bradley Hill and the other went towards Burkham.  A large white van was in front of the vehicles.

Swarraton Wednesday, 7 October – white For Transit van S373 ??? seen between 2pm and 2.25pm in Swarraton and believed to be used later in relation to the theft of garden machinery from a house in Brown Candover.

Ellisfield Saturday, 10 and Sunday, 11 October – over night 10/11 October a locked stable door was interfered with; thankfully the lock remained secured to the door.  PC Reid is appealing for anyone who may have any information regarding this or the suspicious male seen in Axford village at about 2 pm on Saturday afternoon, described as young, white short hair and was seen looking over the hedge at the stables.

Tracking devices for expensive equipment – ride on mowers, quad bikes etc.  Consider fitting a tracking device.   Mike Garwood Ltd a local supplier has several devices available but Hampshire Constabulary recommended that residents should ‘shop around’ to secure the best deal available.

Shelleys Barn Shelleys Lane, East Worldham, Alton Hants GU343AQ Tel 01420 84458.

Suspicious callers – remember you do not have to let anyone into your property if you feel unsure, you are perfectly within you right to check callers out first.  Recently there have been several young men calling on homes offering to sell goods from their bags.  Eight were found in the Upton Grey, Herriard and Bradley area, all were known to the Police for various offences including burglary, theft etc.  Despite any cards they may have with them, these people are illegally trading from door to door and PC Reid urges residents not to purchase items from the door.  If you wish to have a Hampshire Trading Standards ‘We do not buy from this door’ sticker then please give me a call and I can supply.  This recent group were from Middlesborough, a second group of three were from Margate in Kent – it’s a long way to come to sell a tea towel…..

Home Security Challenge – How secure is your home?

Did you read last month’s home security challenge – did you find out how secure your home is?

It is down to residents to do more to protect their property – please help the policy to help you!  PC Reid is available to provide crime prevention advice.  Now that the nights are drawing in and Christmas is approaching, consider leaving lights and perhaps a radio or TV on when you go out in the evenings, ideally use timing devices that are cheap and available at any DIY store.

SMARTWATER – consider using Smartwater to mark your property.   I have a supply of kits at a reduced price, £15.00 instead of £40.00 – a terrific saving - please do call me!

Scam e-mails – don’t be taken in by the current flurry of scam e-mails reporting to be from the Tax Office – use HM Revenue home page link to report anything suspect to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

 October 2009

Dear All,

I hope you have had a good summer.

Burglary at the Lodge, Dummer – Sunday, 30 August and Tuesday, 01 September

Sometime between these dates burglars broke into the Lodge at Dummer; the thieves broke a window and entered the isolated house and removed a several items of furniture.

  • 19th Century Mahogany Military Campaign chest of drawers
  • George 1 Walnut chest of drawers
  • Mahogany coffee table with a red leather top

The pieces are highly individual items; the thieves left behind a drawer for one of the items of furniture.  A large vehicle would have been needed to move the furniture.  PC Reid would be please to hear from anyone who witnessed anything unusual over the bank holiday.

Water UK, has published a revised list of water companies and their telephone numbers to enable householders to call to verify the identity of a doorstep caller purporting to represent a water company.  Please see the list on the Ellisfield Village website or telephone your co-ordinator and ask for a copy of list if you do not have access to the internet.

Remember you do not have to let anyone into your property if you feel unsure, you are perfectly within you right to check callers out first.

Suspicious strange male callers - Hampshire and surrounding areas are experiencing a wave of bogus callers – please be aware and take all possible precautions.

Home Security Challenge – How secure is your home?

Please see the separate article in this month’s edition which Hampshire Constabulary provided or visit the Ellisfield website.

It is down to residents to do more to protect their property – consider fitting censor lighting (making sure the censor can not be moved by the criminal so as not to work), fit good locks and hasps which are secured to good wooden doors, and not rotten ones where the screws can be forced out by a screwdriver between the door and hasp.  Please note; PC Reid is available to provide crime prevention advice.  Please help the police to help you!

SMARTWATER – consider using Smartwater to mark your property.   I have a supply of kits at a reduced price, £15.00 instead of £40.00 – a terrific saving - please do call me!

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

August/ September 2009

Dear All,

PC Reid is extremely pleased to advise that reported crime for his beat fell in June 2009 compared to June 2008, however, sadly it is the first month this year that reported crime has shown a reduction on the corresponding month in 2008.  The increase in the first six months compared to last year may be due to the current economic climate or people reporting crime when in the past they may not have done so.  However, PC Reid feels it is more likely the work of the opportunist thief taking advantage of residents who have failed to take simple steps to protect their property.  Over the first six months of this year the highest recorded crime is that of non-dwelling burglary i.e. sheds and out buildings; 31 have been recorded this year to-date whilst 35 were record throughout the whole of 2008!

Mobile phone public directory by 118800.co.uk - if you wish to opt out of this service, please go to 118800.co.uk and on 'opt out'.

 Suspicious vehicles:

Two reports of suspicious vehicles in June in our area provided police with valuable assistance as the vehicles were linked with thefts from other area’s – do continue to keep reporting anything and, I mean anything which you believe to be suspicious.

White Mercedes SWB Van, R737 FBJ - seen in several places in the district recently – police suspect the occupants as being up to no good Please help the police, be aware and take registration numbers of any vehicle(s) you deem as suspicious, and telephone the police with the information.

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then don’t hesitate to report it – PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

Herriard, new building site – the site appears to be attracting considerable attention and recent thefts have taken place.  If you happen to pass by the site and see anyone on there after 6pm weekdays, 2 pm Saturday’s and any time on a Sunday please call the Police immediately!

Antiques scam (Herriard & Preston Candover) - 01 June a man called at a house in Preston Candover offering to purchases antiques – described as being white, about 40-50 years old, short with balding hair.  The same person visited Herriard area last year!   Thankfully he was unsuccessful but he may call again – if you see anything then please report it!

General Home security – during this hot weather please remember to close all windows and garages doors when going out – remember opportunist burglars will gain entry to unsecured homes quickly and easily, usually during the day!   Don’t be complacent, think and remember to lock all windows etc before going out.

Suspicious vehicles:

Dummer, June 13 around 19.00hrs - a blue BMW FV04 DJY was seen in suspicious circumstances containing two men.

Tunworth, early June – a white van HG06 ZXV was seen in Tunworth offering garden furniture for sale at discount prices, when a female resident took the vehicle registration number, a male became aggressive and gave her a card with a registration number on it, (albeit a different one to that of the van)…  The company connected with this vehicle is a Nursery in Farnborough, however, the van has turned up all over the county!

Andwell (Nr Old Basing) June 12 at about 12.45 hrs - two men, one white and one black in a blue Vauxhall P355 YAP was seen in the garden of a house in Andwell.   The owner challenged them and they said they had cut across a field to get back to their car?  Within hours this car was stopped and property from a burglary in the Winchester area was found inside!

Weston Patrick, June 11 - a silver Transit HJ07 GHN was seen selling garden furniture, again this vehicle has been seen all around the county, although items for sale appear in order.

Weston Patrick, June 09 at 09-09.45 hrs - maroon Ford Mondeo was seen acting suspicious, the van had two white men in it – one was young with brown hair, the driver was older with a shaved head.

Please help the police be aware and take registration numbers of any vehicle(s) you deem as suspicious, and telephone the police with the information.

Did you see anything suspicious or irregular?  Then PC Reid would be pleased to hear from you and can be contact on:  01256 389050 & 07768:776844.

June 2009

Dear All,

Unfortunately, PC Reid could not attend the Annual Parish meeting on 01 May.  However, he is keen to re-vamp the way of communication in the NW schemes in his beat to reduce bureaucracy and in general keep it straight forward and simple. The Parish magazines are a very good way of communication but there is a delay in getting information out to the residents – it can take around 15 days before you receive the publication from the incident occurring!   Therefore, a simple straight forward way of communicating by email – PC Reid, the NW co-ordination and you or PR Reid and you!   If you don’t have email, then your co-ordinator would be happy to telephone you provide hard copy information when necessary – please just let them know.

In line with these changes, I would ask residents to please consider providing, where possible, their email address to your scheme co-ordinator or me, so that you can be included in the circulation of NW information.

If you would like to help and take on the role of Co-ordinator for Scheme 263, then I would be pleased to hear from you.

Smartwater Signs – we have managed to secure some Smartwater signs.  These are being positioned along with the existing NW signs.
