December 2011

Dear all,

As Christmas approaches PC Reid urges residents to please take extra security steps to protect their homes and property and suggests, if you are going out to leave lights on, a radio, make your home look as if someone is in!  Sadly, in 2011 there was an increase of both dwelling and non dwelling burglaries on PC Reid’s beat area where most often theft occurred.  Places which were targeted by thieves and which were unlocked included 6 garden sheds, 2 yards, an office, 2 cars, a house, 3 gardens and a locker in a gym.  Whilst some may have been broken into anyway, most would not have been targeted and a loss of property would have been avoided!  Most could have been prevented by plain basic security measures or simply taking more care and the avoidance of carelessness!  If you need home security advice please call PC Reid who is very happy to visit your home and give advice.

Garden thefts!

We are still experiencing thefts from gardens of garden furniture with four recently reported.  If you have garden furniture, please mark it!  PC Reid has metal stamps and can stamp postcodes into wood, likewise bicycles can also be done.  PC Reid is happy to help and post code your property, please call him.

Scams in various guises!

Sadly, we are experiencing several phone scams in various guises; be it problems with your computer, your internet banking, credit cards, etc, etc.  PC Reid’s advice is: if it is anything to do with your person or banking details then advise the caller to write to you and you will then contact them.  Legitimate enquirers will have your address; then follow this action by replacing the receiver.

Lost and Stolen Dogs!

With reference to PC Reid’s piece in last month’s magazine regarding the ever increasing incidences of dog theft; PC Reid would like to make residents aware of DOG LOST - www.doglost.co.uk.   A website run entirely by volunteers dedicated to helping owners who have lost or had their dogs stolen.   Sabrina Gurling is their Area Co-ordinator for North Hampshire and has first hand experience of the trauma of losing a dog.  Dog Lost works closely with local Dog Wardens, police and rescue centre’s and they have a vast wealth of knowledge and advice to impart to owners of lost or stolen dogs.  The service they provide is entirely free and they are always looking for more helpers in this area.  Sabrina can be contacted on 389458, 07732 497221 or sabrina.gurling@btinternet.com – you can also contact her if you have found a stray dog in the evenings or at weekends when there is no Dog Warden cover.  Since Dog Lost began in 2003 over 13,000 missing and stolen dogs that have been registered on the site have been reunited.

Finally, may we take this opportunity to wish all residents a peaceful, safe and Happy Christmas.

November 2011

Dear All,

Some good news!

PC Reid is pleased to report that the men arrested recently after being disturbed on the roof of Cliddesden School were convicted and fined.

Hampshire Constabulary has launched a major fight back against burglary of homes and out buildings, and to-date the police have had some excellent results with active burglars being targeted and arrested.

Suspicious incidents involving horses and rural stables!

A number of suspicious incidents involving horses stabled at rural stables in our area have taken place.  PC Reid would like to ask anyone who has a horse to please consider marking their tack.  Also, PC Reid has carried out post coding marking of horse tack and is willing to do so again.  Therefore, if you would like your tack marked please give PC Reid a call direct.   For information: the website address for Hampshire Horse watch (a free scheme well worth joining) is www.nfed.co.uk/horsewatch.htm.

Suspicious vehicles – Scrap metal!

Locally, we have experienced an influx of suspicious vehicles, all seen during the day, all looking for ‘scrap’ metal.  PC Reid advised, if challenged often the people will ask to buy the metal for a small amount of money, if no one is about it will be stolen!   Please note that scrap metal prices are at a premium at present – so please be aware.

A white Ford Transit, Reg. WL54 FYH was seen at the Purefoys Public House in Preston Candover with a single man on board.  The man stopped and asked about a redundant fire grate which just happened to catch his eye as he was driving past!  PC Reid advised that the vehicle is from Surrey and that the users are known for touting for scrap.

Preston Candover area, a grey Ford Transit, Reg. R349 AOL with 3 men on board, one described as short with ginger hair – these men were also poking about on the lookout for scrap and were seen in Preston Candover looking at a motor mower.  However, they drove off when they noticed they were being watched.   We know that the men then went on to Brown Candover and asked to purchase an old cooker in a garden.  A short while later some metal tractor weights disappeared!

 Internet Banking Fraud!

Although Internet banking fraud is down on the previous years figures, fraudsters are now calling homes and saying they are from the Bank, stating there are problems with your the account!  The caller usually asks the resident to confirm their details, but of course the real Bank would have them already!

PC Reid urges all residents to please be aware and cautious when dealing with any cold caller(s), in particular those who proclaim to be from the Bank.  Take a name and department and call the Bank using your banks general telephone number and ask to be connected.  Please never give any details of your personnel account to a stranger cold calling over the telephone or at the door.

BT cabling theft!

BT estimate cabling theft cost them about £14 million; when added up with repairs, staff wages etc.  Usually thieves will close a road off using real ‘Road Closed’ signs to allow the theft to take place; they will lift covers and cut and steal the cable from the ground.  The Chief Police Officers Association report that the current cost of metal theft to the UK economy is estimated at £770m p.a. but this is dwarfed by the impact on society and commerce.

PC Reid would like to ask all residents for their help and to please report sightings of any suspicious vehicles or anything they deem as suspicious AT THE TIME to either the Police (0845 0454545) or direct to PC Reid – 07768 776844 or 01256 389050 as quickly as possible.  The police never complain about well intentioned calls even if they are found to be in order!

October 2011

Dear residents,

 Some good news!

PC Reid is pleased to report that only two crimes have taken place recently within the area of this magazine.

 ‘Your Voice Counts’

The campaign held earlier in the year provided good feedback from residents and highlighted various points and concerns.  Sadly, a large majority of residents were worried about speeding through our local villages.  As a result, PC Reid has now been trained within the use of speed enforcement equipment and will be attending the various sites in our area which residents have raised as problem areas for speeding.  The equipment will be used to test the speed of motorists and enforce the law where necessary.  PC Reid commented that previous knowledge sadly shows that most people who speed through the villages are in fact local people from near by areas.

PC Reid wishes to appeal to all motorists to please keep within the limits!

Saturday, 27 August – burglary, Farleigh Road, Cliddesden

At around 05.20hrs on Saturday, 27 August a burglary occurred, a brick was thrown through a window and a handbag, on a work surface, was stolen.

Cliddesden – PC Reid would like your help!

Should you see anything out of the ordinary between the hours of 05.00 and 06.00 in Cliddesden please call PC Reid.  In particular, should you have any information about two white youths walking about between these hours or you may have spotted a car park in an unusual place, please telephone PC Reid.

Hampshire County Council Trading Standards

PC Reid suggests that should you wish to have your drive or road re-surfaced, please contact Hampshire County Council Trading Standards who have lists of suitable companies who have a good reputation for the work.  HCC Trading Standards can be contacted on 0845 603 0081 - to check their Buy with Confidence website go to www.buywithconfidence.info  For a 'Referenceline’ directory of companies and comments from satisfied customers visit www.refrenceline.com.

Church Security

PC Reid respectfully asks all local residents to be very aware and those responsible for security of the local churches, to consider how vulnerable and how secure is the Church and take, if necessary, any appropriate measures to help protect the property.  Sadly, there has been an increase in crime on or from Church property, not just the lead from the roof but the items within the Church!    He would be grateful if ALL residents could ‘keep an eye’ on your local Church and to report anything suspicious.

As the evenings are now drawing in….. PC Reid would like to ask residents to please consider leaving lights, a radio etc. on when go out in the evenings.  Whilst burglaries have increased on this beat this year, and some have occurred in the early mornings, PC Reid is keen that residents try to make their homes look as if someone is at home when they are out!

Please note: PC Reid would be happy to visit and advise on home security – please call him direct on his mobile 07768 776844.

August/September 2011

Dear All,

Some good news!

Thieves who recently broke into an office in Ellisfield and stole a lap-top have been convicted and the lap-top returned to its rightful own.

Church Security

Sadly, there is an increase in recent crime on or from Church property, not just the lead from the roof but the items within the Church!  PC Reid respectfully asks all local residents to be very aware and those responsible for security of the local churches, to consider how vulnerable and how secure is the Church and take, if necessary, any appropriate measures to help protect the property.  He would be grateful if ALL residents could ‘keep an eye’ on your local Church and to report anything suspicious i.e. vehicles or people seen near the Church during the day which is when suspect criminals visit and view the property to establish the security and lay-out of the premises before returning at night.  Obviously, PC Reid will continue to check churches on his beat area as frequently as possible and especially when he is on late duty or within the early hours but, he needs your support.

The following figures may help to focus the mind; PC Reid is deeply concerned about both the figures and the type of crime as in Oakley, happening so close to our area!  Within the past 100 days the following crimes have taken place within churches in Hampshire, the figures in (brackets) are in or around this area.

        Non dwelling burglaries         12      (3)

        Criminal damage                  40      (8)

        Theft                                 59      (2)

Theft from motor vehicle      9       (0)

Theft of pedal cycle               5       (1)

06/07 July White Ford Transit Van – Reg. KV54 SJO

Seen in the Weston Patrick and Upton Grey area between 10.00 and 11.00 hrs; man on board trying to sell teak furniture.

Parked cars – walkers beware!

Thieves know ALL the tricks and they know ALL the hiding places!  You may think that:

  • under the seat is hidden or in the boot is ok - it isn't, thieves know where to look
  • it takes them seconds to relieve you of your goods/money/possessions
  • laptops are not safe in the boot
  • sat navs are not safe in the glove box
  • handbags or wallets left on the passenger seat can be whipped away very quickly

HMRC related scam!

Scam emails are doing the rounds again with people being supposedly contacted by the Inland Revenue – they look very genuine, beware!  HMRC do not use email to make contact about being eligible for a repayment or to ask for personal information or repayment.  HMRC provides details of current scams on their website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/index.htm.

July 2011

Dear All,

Some good news!  Crime has remained low in the area of this magazine during May and early June.  In Ellisfield an office in College Lane was entered but pleased to say that a man has been charged with burglary and, two men were arrested on suspicion of theft of lead from the roof of Cliddesden School.

For your information PC Reid wishes to highlight:

In relation to last month’s information concerning drug misuse, especially within our young people, PC Reid provided information and advise on the PADA Group but would also like to mention the FRANK Organisation which is a nationwide help and support Group who can be contacted via their website www.talktofrank.com or by telephone 0800 776600 – it is a free service and available 24/7 365 days a year.

Air-guns: the police are keen to confirm the law in relation to their use. Below is a simple version and which touches upon the law, for a more in-depth look at the law relating to air weapons please look at the Hampshire Police website www.hampshire.police and put in ‘air weapons’ in the index.  In summary it is illegal to:

  • carry a loaded air weapon in a public place
  • trespass (enter property without the owner's consent) in a building with an air weapon and/or

trespass on private land with an air weapon

  • possess or use an air weapon or ammunition if you have been sentenced to a period of custody
  • kill or injure any bird or protected animal unless you are authorized to do so under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
  • fire an air weapon within 15 meters (50 feet) of a road or street and/or sell or hire an air weapon or ammunition to a person under 18
  • make a gift of an air weapon or ammunition to a person under 18
  • in 2007 new legislation raised the age limit for possession of air weapons from 14 to 18 years of age.  This means no one under the 18 can have with him/her an air weapon unless they are supervised by someone who is aged at least 21.  There are some exceptions to this new legislation i.e. part of an approved target shooting club or shooting gallery or if a young person aged 14 to 17 is on private premises and has the consent of the occupier to have an air weapon with him/her.  However, it is an offence for anyone benefiting from this exception to fire any missile beyond the premises
  • if under 14 you cannot buy, hire or be given or own an air weapon or ammunition
  • finally, the Crime and Security Act 2010 made it an offence for a person in possession of an air-gun to fail to take “reasonable precautions” to prevent someone under the age of 18 from gaining unauthorised access to it.

Overnight of 25/26th May 2011 – Dummer

Several scrap radiators were stolen from outside a house being renovated in Dummer.   If you can assist, please call PC Reid.

Distraction thefts!

Please be aware that there has been an increase in distraction thefts recently, within Hampshire.   Unlike the usual distraction burglaries, these criminals are asking for assistance from people around or within shopping areas, usually car parks.  Whist the kind member of the public is helping their money/credit cards etc inside their cars are being stolen.  Please do not stop helping people but please be aware when assisting others.  Some tips from the police………..

  • When shopping, never leave your bag on the trolley unattended
  • When putting shopping away in the boot of your vehicle always ensure your handbag/wallet is with you
  • If you are distracted for even a moment whilst putting shopping away - keep handbags with you or lock them in the vehicle BEFORE speaking/helping anyone
  • If asked for directions or to look at maps/items - ENSURE you lock personal items in the vehicle first
  • When filling up with petrol or diesel, lock your vehicle, when it comes to pay, unlock the vehicle, take your payment out, re-lock the vehicle and then go to pay
  • If your bag has a zip or other way of doing it up - please use it do not leave purses/wallets on view
  • If you have helped someone - take a quick look in your bag after to make sure your purse/wallet is still there and the money/cards are still within it - if not call your bank/credit card companies/store card stores immediately and also call the Police as soon as possible.

Thieves know ALL the tricks, they know ALL the hiding places!

June 2011

Dear All,

PC Reid wishes to mention the misuse of drugs prevalent among our young people!  He is particular aware of the illegal use of cannabis and other drugs within his own beat area and is very keen to highlight that anyone caught using or selling drugs will be prosecuted.  PC Reid states that he will enforce the law on offenders without hesitation.

Sadly, the signs of increased use amongst young people and even children using drugs is being seen by PC Reid and his colleagues.  Cannabis is the more commonly used and whilst PC Reid states he has no intention of going into the rights and wrongs of legalisation of drugs, the fact is that it is a Class B drug and its possession or supply is illegal.  PC Reid will enforce the law if it is appropriate.

For Class B Amphetamines, Cannabis, Meyhylphenidate, (Ritain) Pholcodine the Home Office drugs guide states that if anyone is found in possession the enforce would be:

  • Up to 5 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both
  • For dealing up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both
  • Young people found in possession of Cannabis WILL be arrested and taken to a Police Station.

NOTE: Cannabis can remain in the body for up to 24 hrs and to those that use it and drive, please beware that the Police Force have an ‘Impaired Driver Unit’ of over 200 specially trained officers who have a direct responsibility for dealing with those who put lives in danger by using drugs before driving.   Locally, PC Reid has in the past carried out drug search warrants of homes in this area and will do so again.

PC Reid urges anyone with any information on ANY unlawful drug related activity to please either contact him direct or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, in both cases all calls are treated in the strictest of confidence.

PARENTS: for any parent who suspects their child may be involved with drug misuse, you can call PC Reid direct, again in strictest of confidence or a Group he has previously worked with called P.A.D.A (Parents Against Drug Abuse), who offer support to parents and Carers of drug users.  The telephone helpline for PADA is 08457 023867 or further information can be found at www.pada.org.uk This Organisation concentrates on supporting parents, helping and advising and, PC Reid has found most of their staff have been in a similar or the same position as possibly you are now!

A number of large country houses in the Basingstoke and Alton area have been broken into recently and a number of high powered cars and other items of property have been stolen.  Thieves have on a number of occasions gained access via the cat flap!  PC Reid is keen to encourage all to ensure that there homes are properly secured – please do take all possible steps to secure your homes, barns, garages, sheds etc and secure your car keys – don’t leave them out on view on the sign table in the hall for the thieves to see!  Do help the Police to help you!

If you can assist in any way, please call PC Reid - all calls are treated in the strictest confidence.  Telephone: 01256:389050 and Mobile: 07768 776844

May 2011

Dear All,

PC Reid has recently completed the annual quarterly crime returns for the first 3 months of 2011 and reports “as expected crime has risen on the same period in 2010, although I am pleased to report that crime levels are considerably down on the same three months of 2009”.  The figures are:

PC Reid would like to thank the residents for their support; he received 41 reports concerning suspicious incidents, people or vehicles.  He is grateful for every ones’ cooperation and says “this is excellent and shows our residents are noticing things which they feel are unusual and letting the Police know”.   PC Reid, however, is extremely concerned about the high rate of non dwelling burglaries i.e. sheds and out-buildings and continues to urge residents to make sure they have good locks, record serial numbers of valuable items such as garden equipment, and improve general security.  PC Reid says he is more than willing to visits homes and offer home security advice if any resident wishes.

Worryingly, PC Reid stated that he is expecting a busy year and anticipates an increase on the crime levels of 2010.  He urges residents to remain vigilant and asks all to improve the security of their property.  “Together we can continue to reduce crime to below the 2009 figures.”

Ellisfield, Green Lane – 04 April

A garage was broken into at about 04.30 hrs, access was gained via the window at the back of the building.  Thankfully nothing was stolen.   The alarm worked and deterred the thief!

A shed of a business premises was broken into sometime between 04 – 06 April and a quantity of wire was stolen.

Your Voice Counts – as per last month’s article, PC Reid would like your help to establish the 3 priorities that residents want their local Police to concentrate on.  Please help the Police help you and become involved in setting the priorities for the area that you live in!

If you can assist in any way, please call PC Reid - all calls are treated in the strictest confidence.

March 2011

Dear All,

PC Reid reports that our low crime rate has taken a bit of a bashing over the past few weeks.

DUMMER at around midnight on Tuesday, 25 January  garden sheds had their locks cut at a house in Farleigh Lane.  Thankfully an alarm was activated and the offenders made off.

Nately Scures overnight Wednesday/Thursday 9/10 February – 3 properties had out buildings, office etc broken into.

Brown Candover overnight Monday/Tuesday 7/8 February  an old horsebox was stolen from a field.  Pale blue with a white roof, very old but still of use to the owner - taken across fields on tracks near Spy Bush Lane.

Preston Candover overnight Sunday/Monday 6/7 February – an orange Kobota tractor Reg. HX60 HCY was stolen from a barn.

PC Reid urges all residents to please be extra vigilant and made sure outbuildings, sheds are secure and that serial numbers are taken and recorded of garden tools i.e. chainsaws, leaf blowers etc.  Do consider fitting outbuildings and sheds with alarms to protect your property. Sadly, Spring is the usual time for thefts from garden sheds and of garden equipment.

Suspicious vehicles:

Alresford and Old Alresford Tuesday 8 February – pale blue Subaru Impretza Reg P553 XHO containing three young white men with dogs in the back.  This vehicle was seen in Brown Candover two weeks earlier.  On both occasions the occupants were acting suspiciously.  Owner comes from London area.

Scures Hill, Nately Scures Wednesday, 2 February – a local Game Keeper reported seeing a man during the day, acting suspiciously looking over gates and fences and driving a large red van Reg. R170 W-B (similar to an old GPO van).

If you have seen any of these vehicles or anything suspicious please do call PC Reid.

Farmers and Game Keepers

Respectfully request residents when out walking in our wonderful countryside, to please remain on the public footpaths and not wander or ride horses off the set authorised routes.  Also, they are keen for all dog(s) to been kept on a lead(s) particularly during the lambing season which is due to begin in most areas or already started in others.  Ewes are extremely anxious on seeing a dog or dogs and this can cause severe problems.  PC Reid reports that sadly every year he receives reports of sheep worrying, often with lambs or ewes killed or needing to be destroyed by a vet after an attack.  Please note that farmers can lawfully take action if a dog or dogs attack sheep, they are at liberty to prosecute the owner(s).

SMARTWATER – an excellent DNA marking liquid.  If you need a supply or have not got around to using the previously purchased Smartwater which has now run out of date please call PC Reid or myself.

E-MAIL SCAM – Parcel Express Service

Have you received an e-mail(s) from a company calling themselves Parcel Express Service?  The company claim they have a parcel addressed to you that could not be delivered and invite you to open an attachment that will give a label with more details about collection etc.  PLEASE DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT - DELETE THE E MAIL IMMEDIATELY.  IT IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS SCAM THAT COULD CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER!  If you would like further information Google will explain the dangers.

Security – please be extra vigilant take any necessary steps to protect your property properly, during these dark evenings please keep lights on in your home when out.  PC Reid would be happy to advise you about securing your property.

February 2011

Dear All,

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy New Year!

As promised PC Reid’s Crime Report for 2010.

Cliddesden – a good reduction in crime in this Parish, 18 less than in 2009.  There was a dwelling burglary to a house near the scrap yard which was not being occupied at the time.  A theft occurred of a battery box used for electric fencing which secured scrap metal at the scrap yard and heating oil from the Village Hall oil tank.  A non dwelling burglary took place at the Headstarts Nursery, only cash was stolen as all property inside is marked with smart water.  A bench near to the pond was broken when a group of young people decided to smash it up and drove away back towards Basingstoke.  In November a car parked on the Basingstoke Road had its rear windscreen smashed and a dent caused; a group of youths from Basingstoke visited the village public house and it is assumed they were connected with the crime as a bottle of beer was found at the seen of the crime.  Three crimes took place at Audleys Wood Hotel, these were a theft at a wedding, a theft from a car and a domestic assault.

Dummer – again a very good reduction in reported crimes during 2010, 17 less that in 2009.  Of those reported they consisted of 3 non dwelling burglary’s, one at the motorway depot, Dummer Golf Club and at a Farm.  Two thefts from motor vehicles were reported during the year, a van parked in the village was broken into and a £1,000 worth of tools stolen from inside.  A vehicle parked outside the village for twenty days whilst its owner was away on business was also broken into.  A car was reported stolen on the Axford Road but found a few yards up the road. A theft also took place at a Farm where agricultural diesel was stolen.  Two men were found to be in possession of drugs when their vehicle was stopped on the M3 and, also, on the M3 lightening tape (lead) was stolen from a building alongside the motorway.  A deception was reported at a business outside the village.  A man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving after an incident on the A30 at Dummer, and a robbery incident at a house outside the village is still being investigated.

Ellisfield – a reduction of three reported crimes on the 2009 total of three being reported.   These were two non dwelling burglaries, a garage and an office and the other crime was a large window broken at a house outside the village.

Farleigh Wallop – this Parish saw an increase of four crimes on the two reported in 2009, these were the theft of some metal tractor forks and fencing wire, a garden workshop was broken into during a workday afternoon, a theft from a motor vehicle when similar garden equipment was stolen.  Entry was gained to an insecure car and a Basingstoke man was arrested for possession of a Class B drug.  Also, we had criminal damage caused to growing crops after poachers drove across the fields.

Whilst I am happy to report a general reduction in reported crime on this beat area, sadly the 2010 ‘insecure list’ shows crime occurred in 2 insecure gardens, 2 sheds, a barn, two yards, five cars and an office, thirteen in total that just may not have happened had the owners protected their property!  In total property to the value of over £37,000, was stolen from insecure storage, £20,000 more than in 2009!

A copy of PC Reid’s full yearly policing report is sent to Parish Councils, if any resident wishes to have a copy sent to them please email me direct on andrew.reid@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

December 2010

Dear All,

PC Reid is pleased to report that over all reported crime has fallen.  A break down will be available in January 2011.

Monday, 08 November – Springer Spaniel dog, GUS, stolen from his kennel.  Ford Ranger Pick Up, Reg. RF06 --- may have been involved.  Gus was stolen from his kennel approximately 12.20–12.30 hrs on 08 November, the house is situated in Dummer Road, Nutley.  There is more information on www.doglost.co.uk PC Reid is keen to encourage all dog owners to have their dogs micro-chipped stating the system works and when dogs are found they can be returned to their owners.

Monday, 08 November – Cliddesden between 17.45 – 21.30 hrs

Basingstoke Road at Southlea, a car had its window smashed.  The police are aware that a group of four white men were seen in the area and seen to be drink that evening.

Monday, 25 / Tuesday, 26 October – Blue Subaru Car

A vehicle was driven across crops at Farleigh Wallop and Bradley during the night of 25/26 October, causing considerable damage.  If you saw a blue Subaru car being driven around the area, please inform PC Read who suspects it was poachers.  Poachers deliberately drive vehicles at any deer they see or allow their dogs to chase and pull them down to the ground. The deer are then left to die which is usually a slow painful death.

Preston Candover, recent theft of a car – PC Reid is pleased to report that 5 men have been arrested in relation to this theft and to-date, they have been linked with over 62 other crimes in Hampshire and Thames Valley…. proof indeed that prolific criminals do come to our area and will take full advantage of any lapse of security.

Visa & Mastercard Card Telephone Credit Card Scam – information from Wiltshire Police.  (This information is important and worth reading.)

Pretty slick Scam: the callers’ provides YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.  Note, the callers do not ask for your card number they already have it.  By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.

The scam works like this:  caller says, "this is (name) and I'm calling from VISA/MasterCard Security and Fraud Department.  My badge number is 12460.  Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA/MasterCard card which was issued by (name of bank) did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for £497.99 from a Marketing company based in London"  When you say "no" the caller continues with "then we will be issuing a credit to your account.  This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 to £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards.  Before your next statement the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?" You say "yes".  The caller continues "I will be starting a fraud investigation.  If you have any questions, you should call the number listed on the back of your card and ask for Security.  You will need to refer to this Control Number.  The caller then gives you a 6 digit number.  "Do you need me to read it again?"

Now here is the really IMPORTANT part on how the scam works.  The caller then says "I need to verify you are in possession of your card.”  The caller will ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers."  There are 7 numbers, the first 4 are part of your card number and the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card.  These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card.  The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him.  After you tell the caller the 3 numbers they will say "that is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen and that you still have your card.  Do you have any other questions?" After you say, "no," the caller then thanks you and states "don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up.  You actually say very little and they never ask for or tell you the Card number …..

What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card – please do not give it to them.   Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or MasterCard directly for verification of their conversation.  VISA or MasterCard will inform you that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card!  If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit.  However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

Security - please take any necessary steps to protect your property properly, during these dark evenings please keep lights on in your home when out.

It seems rather early to be extending good wishes for the forthcoming festive season but, by the time the Christmas edition of Hill & Dale drops through your letter box we will only have a few weeks to go.  PC Reid and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy and safe Christmas.
