August/ September 2008 Report

Dear Residents,

PC Reid requests your help to both reduce crime in this area and that you help by protecting and marking your property.

Tuesday, July 8 – PC Reid attended four reported crimes on his beat; all were within close range to each other and linked. Three of the four crimes could have been prevented by the occupiers if the occupier had locked their garage or car.

Wednesday, July 9– within PC Reid’s beat area the following items of property were stolen from insecure sheds, 1 Quad bike, 3 strimmer’s, 3 hedge trimmers, 2 chain saws, 2 lawn mowers, 2 sat nav’s, (from cars left unlocked), 1 camera, 1 bicycle, 1 set of tools and 1 set of golf clubs.  The total value of the items stolen was approximately £6,000; in a period less than seven months, all due to lack of security i.e. locks not being fitted or not fitted properly and due to the failure of individuals to secure their shed, garage or car!

Further, the following has also occurred within the beat - a house was broken into from the rear, where the rear garden gate was left open as no lock was fitted, an office left open overnight which was entered, and a handbag and contents left on an unattended table in a hotel when the owner went off to the toilet?

A question from PC Reid: would you leave your car parked in any inner city area without bothering to lock it and with a sat nav in full view or in any inner city area leave a garden shed or garage insecure full of garden equipment?   The simple answer is NO and yet, it is happening in my beat area every day and now the criminal element are aware and taking full advantage of this ‘lackadaisical’ approach to home security in this rural area.

Insurance - PC Reid advises that Insurance companies are now contacting Police Forces to find out the circumstances to reported crimes, and he believes that before long will start to refuse to pay out when the owner has not bothered to take the simplest steps to safeguard their property.   Police Officers including PC Reid, are spending hours away from the streets writing up crimes in which the chances of catching the criminal are limited as no evidence is left behind as the thief ‘just walks in’.   Similarly, circulating to other Police Forces stolen property where the make, model or serial numbers have not been recorded i.e. report as stolen ‘an orange chainsaw etc’, what chance do we have of ever getting this returned to the owner and getting the thief in court, as when the thief is stopped they say “it’s mine, you prove otherwise”!   PC Reid is asking and, as I have been encouraging all residents, to please start helping yourself by talking all possible precautions before you too become a victim of a needles crime which could easily have been prevented.

SMARTWATER – an effective deterrent to thieves!  Supplies at a reduced price i.e. £15.00 instead of £40.00.  You can protect your property forensically by marking it with just a small dab of SMARTWATER which in turn leaves a unique genetic coding - police can use this to reunite you with any recovered property.  Please do consider marking your valuables!  Please give me a call if you are interested in purchasing.

If anyone has concerns about their home security, PC Reid would be happy to provide advice.

Warning to elder residents – recently, at Herriard, two men in a white van with a wire mess cage on the rear were seen placing out horse manure saying the persons partner had ordered it and to cut the hedge for £250, this is a scam, PC Reid is in contact with Trading Standards - please do not buy anything at the door, if you didn’t order it, don’t pay for it.
