Entering your own flowers, fruit, vegetables, cakes, jams, handicrafts and photographs, to name but a few, can be an enjoyable experience and the committee want you become part of your society's Spring and Summer shows.

If growing your own flowers and vegetables are not your interest, the Spring Show has classes for painting, drawing, needlecraft and any handicraft as well as cakes, and jams.  There is even a class especially for men; and of course the children have their own classes with prizes! 

The Summer Show has a number of photographic classes

and flower and foliage arrangements.

Come and join in, enjoy yourself and make new friends


Spring & Summer Show Timetable

9.20  - 10.40 am-  Staging - Exhibitors must vacate the hall by 10.40 am

2:00 -  3.30 pm  - Public Viewing

3.30 pmPresentation of awards

The Society will supply plants for the following classes

  • Summer Show Class 45 –Fuchsia Competition.

Plantlets available at March meeting and the Spring Show, price £1 per plantlet

  • Children’s Classes 61 and 63 for Summer Show

  Sunflower Seeds available at March meeting and the Spring Show, free

SHOW RULES

  1. All exhibits to be the property of and grown by the exhibitor. Pot plants must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for at least three months preceding the Show. Any deviation from this rule will result in disqualification.
  2. Horticultural Sections: - Only 1 entry per garden per class. Other Sections: - Only 1 entry per exhibitor per class.
  3. All exhibits to be staged between 9.20am and 10.40am on the day of the Show. An exhibitor’s card for each entry must be obtained from the Show Secretary and placed face downwards with the exhibit when staging.
  4. Judging will take place at 11am prompt, in accordance with R.H.S. Show Handbook, 6th edition, revised 1999, unless stated otherwise in the Section.The decision of the Judges will be final in all cases.
  5. All Cups offered will be Challenge Cups and cannot be won outright. Cups must be returned clean and in good order to the Committee on request.
  6. The Committee will take all reasonable care of the exhibits, but do not hold them themselves responsible for any loss or damage that may occur.
  7. The Committee reserves the right to visit any exhibitor’s garden and/or allotment.
  8. No exhibits to be removed from the Hall until after the presentation of awards. N.B. - Items not collected will be disposed of or sold by the Society.
  9. Money prizes for Children’s’ classes to be collected from Treasurer.
  10. Objections must be made in writing and signed and lodged with the Committee not later than 3 pm on the day of the Show. They must be accompanied by a deposit of £1 which will be returned to the objector in the event of the objection being sustained, otherwise the deposit will be forfeited. Objections will be dealt with on the day of the Show.
  11. Points will be awarded as follows: - 1st, 4 points:2nd, 3 points:3rd, 2 points:HC, 1 point.In the event of a tie for an award, the exhibitor gaining most first prizes will be adjudged the winner.
  12. Vases will be provided by the Society for flower classes and these must be used except where otherwise stated in the schedule

 

 


SUMMER SHOW 2008

HORTICULTURAL CLASSES

Judging for Horticultural Sections will be in accordance with R.H.S. Show Handbook revised 1999.

The following classes are open to any member of the Society who works his/her garden and/or allotment for pleasure and not primarily as a means of livelihood. It is permitted to employ one gardener only, up to ten hours a week.

For the benefit of the public, if possible please name the variety of the exhibit on the exhibitor’s card provided.

SECTION 1 - VEGETABLES

Class                                               

  1. Collection of vegetables, 6 kinds, 1 of each. Space allowed 24"x30” (0.6m x 0.75m). Refer to page 6 for point values of each vegetable.
  2. Potatoes, white, one variety, 4.
  3. Potatoes, coloured, one variety, 4.
  4. Onions, large, 4.
  5. Onions, no bulb to exceed 250g, 4.
  6. Carrots, one cultivar, 4.
  7. Beans, French, 5.
  8. Beans, runner, 5.
  9. Tomatoes, small fruited and cherry cultivars with calyces attached. Size not to exceed 35mm in diameter. Plate of 4. Gauge supplied at show.
  10. Tomatoes, with calyces attached. Size greater than 35mm in diameter. Plate of 4. Gauge supplied at show.
  11. Courgettes, 10 - 15cm, 3.
  12. Beetroot, globe, 3.
  13. Herbs, vase of 4 varieties, selected from Basil, Bay, Chives, Coriander, Dill, Fennel, Marjoram, Mint, Parsley, Rosemary,

        Sage, Tarragon or Thyme. 

  1. Any other vegetable with a point value of up to 14 points. (Refer to page 6) Number optional minimum of 2
  2. Any other vegetable with a point value of 15 points or over. (Refer to page 6). Number optional minimum of 2
  3. Runner bean, longest.
  4. Marrow or courgette, heaviest.

SECTION 2 - FRUIT

  1. Apples, one variety, dish of 3.
  2. Plums / gages, one variety, dish of 5.
  3. Any other fruit with a point value of up to 14 points. (Refer to page 6). Number optional minimum of 2.
  4. Any other fruit with a point value of 15 points or over. (Refer to page 6). Number optional minimum of 2

SECTION 3 - FLOWERS

  1. Flowers, Annual, one cultivar, colour variation permitted, vase of 5 single blooms.
  2. Flowers, Annual, one cultivar, colour variation permitted, vase of 5 single stems.
  3. Rose, Hybrid Tea, (large flowered), vase of 1 single bloom.
  4. Rose, (cluster flowered), vase of 1 stem.
  5. Shrub, flowering, one kind or mixed, (Roses excluded), vase of 3 stems.
  6. Dahlias, one variety or mixed, bloom size above 102mm, vase of 3 single blooms.
  7. Dahlias, one variety or mixed, bloom size below 102mm, vase of3 single blooms.
  8. Sweet Peas, one variety or mixed, vase of 5 stems.
  9. Gladioli, one variety or mixed, vase of 3 spikes.
  10. Fuchsia in a pot. Pot diameter 30cm maximum.
  11. Flowering Pot Plant. Pot diameter 30cm maximum.
  12. Foliage Pot Plant. Pot diameter 30cm maximum.
  13. Succulent or Cactus Pot Plant. Pot diameter 30cm maximum.
  14. Flowers, mixed, any number. *To be staged in exhibitor’s own vase.*
  15. Perennials, hardy, one or mixed, (roses & shrubs excluded), vase of 3 stems.
  16. Fuchsia grown from plug supplied by the society. Pot not greater than 165mm. Plugs, priced £1, will be available at the March meeting and the Spring Show.Note, plugs are limited to one per member
  17. Patio container with flowers and/or foliage. To be staged outside the hall

SECTION 4 - FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

Exhibits will be judged in accordance with the rules of NAFAS. 

To be brought ready assembled staged in the exhibitor’s own container, Sizes limitations must be adhered to.

Exhibit may include fruit, foliage, seed pods, etc. & accessories.

Horticultural material need not be grown by the exhibitor.

A floral exhibit, foliage may be included. Maximum diameter 60cm, height unrestricted

  1. A foliage exhibit excluding any flowers. Maximum diameter 60cm, height unrestricted
  2. A miniature floral and foliage exhibit up to15cm diameter in any direction.
  3. An interpretive floral exhibit, foliage may be included, on the theme “Summer's Bounty" Maximum diameter 60cm, height unrestricted

N.B. Prints  not to exceed 18x13 cm and be unmounted and not labelled, legend may be written on Exhibitor Card on the name / number side.
