About Ellisfield
About the VillageEllisfield is a village of just under 2,350 acres, tucked away within Hampshire farmland and woodland. It is situated six miles south of Basingstoke centre and two miles west of the A339, the Basingstoke to Alton road. The village is therefore quite well positioned for commuting. Junction 6 of the M3 is just six miles away (25 miles to the M25) and you can catch fast trains from Basingstoke station (London Waterloo in 45 minutes). There are 250 or so adults, plus around 40 children, living in 119 houses. These houses are well distributed along almost ten miles of sometimes single track road and so the village has a feeling of spaciousness about it. Ellisfield has a vibrant community spirit. As well as the Church and Pub, other activities include a Horticultural Society, a magazine (both shared with three neighbouring villages), a Ladies Club holding monthly events, a Village Hall committee who organise barbecues, Christmas fairs and entertainment evenings, a village-wide Neighbourhood Watch, a Volunteer Group who look after the parish land and rights of way, Bell Ringers and an active Parish Council. Public buildingsSt. Martin’s Church is mediaeval in origin though there are some Saxon remnants. It was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. The Memorial Hall was built in 1920 to commemorate those villagers killed in WW1. There is a plaque contained therein recording their names and one more killed in World War 2. SchoolsThere is no village school in Ellisfield. The majority of primary age children go to school in either Cliddesden or Preston Candover. For details of these schools, and others in the area, please look within the Local Information page. Shops, Post OfficeThere are no shops in Ellisfield. The nearest General Store & Post Office is in Preston Candover, there is a Sainsbury's and an Asda five minutes away by car (plus a Safeway and Tesco a little further away) and, of course, there is a great variety of shops in Basingstoke and Alton. A rural Mobile Shop & Post Office service operated for a while recently but had to cease. Unfortunately there is no immediate prospect of a successor being found because the Post Office have pulled out of the arrangement and the service is not believed to be viable without them on board. Mobile LibraryThe County Mobile Library Service visits on alternate Tuesdays. The stop is at the Gravel Pits (12:35pm to 12:55pm). The Village PubThe Fox Inn ( 01256 381 210 ) on Green Lane is a free house serving food daily. |
